As India launched world’s most ambitious COVID vaccination drive, WHO experts say the country will encounter challenge of speedy distribution of vaccine

As India launched the world’s most ambitious and biggest COVID-19 vaccination drive, two prominent Indian scientists at WHO said that the country will encounter the formidable challenge of rapidly levelling up the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to secure immunity for its entire population.

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO),India’s drugs regulator, on January 3, gave green light to Oxford vaccine Covishield, manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII), and Covaxin of Bharat Biotech for restricted emergency use for the frontline warriors and senior citizens in the country.

Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist of WHO, and Dr Hamsadvani Kuganantham, Consultant, WHO noted that the challenge is not only for India but for all the governments across the globe as they start inoculating their populations to tackle the pandemic.
