Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has told the nation that his government carried out airstrikes against the forces of the country’s well-armed Tigray region, asserting that strikes in multiple locations “completely destroyed rockets and other heavy weapons” and made a retaliatory attack impossible.
The operation will continue, Abiy said, “until the junta is made accountable by law.” And he warned the Tigray population:” In order to avoid unexpected peril, I advise that you limit group movements in cities”.
Abiy Ahmed, had earlier ordered a military response to an “attack” by the ruling party of the restive Tigray region on a camp housing federal troop. The military campaign in the north has “clear, limited and achievable objectives,” Abiy wrote on Twitter. The operations sought “to restore the rule of law and the constitutional order, and to safeguard the rights of Ethiopians to lead a peaceful life wherever they are in the country.” Ethiopia’s war preparations have dashed international hopes of averting a conflict between Abiy’s government and the powerful Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF)
