11 political and military figures arrested during coup, released in Mali

11 political and military figures, including former Prime Minister Boubou Cisse, former National Assembly speaker Moussa Timbine and eight generals, who were arrested during the coup in Mali in August have been released, announced the transition authorities.

In an official statement issued on October 7, new army strongman Assimi Goita said, “The political and military personalities arrested on August 18 have been set free.” Adding further, Goita said, “They would, however, remain at the disposal of the courts if needed.”

The move came after the 15-nation group, West African regional bloc ECOWAS on October 6 called for the release of the civilian and military figures detained during the bloodless coup. Also, the bloc has demanded the junta that calls itself the National Council for the Salvation of the People to be dissolved.
